Note: Stars' album, "Set Yourself on Fire," easily makes the list of my favorite albums of 2005. This Montreal band has a similar sound of Belle & Sebastian, Broken Social Scene, and The Postal Service -- if they all happened to be combined into a clusterfuck of indie-goodness. Lead singers Torq Campbell and Amy Millan have such beautiful chemistry when they sing together, it's very reminiscent of Postal Service's Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis. These two songs I'm offering, the first and last tracks respectively, have actually helped me cope through the tough times I've been having recently. "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" is in itself empowering to those who've recently lost someone -- be it a loved one or an enemy -- and have regrets. The last track, "Calendar Girl," is at its barest majestic and beautiful; it also gives even the most down-trodden an inkling of hope and perseverence. Stars' lyrics are so refined and bittersweet, and yet each song is further enhanced with their theatrical instrumentation and sublime duets. If you're feeling down on life, still holding onto the baggage from a breakup, or simply like Canadians singing sweet, sweet lullabies to you, Stars is the right music to listen to.

[ Your Ex-Lover is Dead ]

(WHEN THERES NOTHING LEFT TO BURN YOU HAVE TO SET YOURSELF ON FIRE)

god, that was strange to see you again
introduced by a friend of a friend
i smiled and said, 'yes, i think we've met before'
in that instant it started to pour
captured a taxi despite of the rain
we drove in silence across pont champlain
and all of that time you thought i was sad
i was trying to remember your name

this scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in
and now you're outside me you see all the beauty
repent all your sins

it's nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
i chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
i'll write you a postcard, i'll send you the news
from the house down the road from real love

live through this, and you won't look back

there's one thing i want to say, so i'll be brave
you were what i wanted
i gave what i gave
i'm not sorry i met you
i'm not sorry it's over
i'm not sorry there's nothing to say
i'm not sorry there's nothing to save

[ Calendar Girl ]

if i am lost for a day, try to find me
but if I don't come back, then i won't look behind me
all of the things that i thought were so easy
just got harder and harder each day
december is darkest, in june there's the light
but this empty bedroom won't make anything right
out on the landing a friend i forgot to send home
who waits up for me all through the night

calendar girl, who's in love with the world, stay alive...

i dreamed i was dying, as i so often do
and when i awoke i was sure it was true
i ran to the window, threw my head to the sky
and said, 'whoever is up there, please don't let me die'

but i can't live forever, i can't always be
one day i'll be sand on a beach by the sea
the pages keep turning, i'll mark off each day with a cross
and i'll laugh about all that we've lost

calendar girl, who is lost to the world, stay alive...

january, febuary, march, april, may
i'm alive
june, july, august, september, october
i'm alive
november, december, yeah all through the winter
i'm alive

i'm alive...
